Chapter 19

I can’t breathe.

The Vandawolf only spared Tamra’s life because she was powerless. If what he says is true, then she’s in danger.

Real danger.

I struggle to rise upward, fighting the pain, especially now that my wounds are exposed. My arm shoots out like a shield in front of her, releasing my dress, but I can’t care about that right now. “I won’t let you harm her.”

Tamra’s cheeks are ashen, but she pushes me back to the bed, adjusting my dress to cover me. “No, Asha. You can’t save me from this. I won’t allow it.”

She pulls away from me before I can grab her, whirling to the Vandawolf and stepping forward so she stands between him and me. A shield like I once was.

“What did you expect me to do?” she asks him. “The humans hate us. They came at us whenever they could. Unlike Asha, we didn’t live in a tower where their blades couldn’t reach us.”

Her hands are visibly shaking and her voice is quavering, fear rising off her body in palpable waves while the Vandawolf towers over her, silent and dark.

“Kedric and Maybelle were targeted too,” she continues without taking a breath. “They were the only ones who treated us with kindness and, for their compassion, they were punished. One night, when I was thirteen, a group of thugs led by that bastard Braddock broke into our home. They stabbed Maybelle and she was…”

Tamra finally gasps a breath, words tumbling from her. “Maybelle was dying. I didn’t know until that moment that my power was coming back, but that’s when I felt it.” She holds up her hands, curling her fingers into fists. “It was pushing at me, screaming to be released, and I couldn’t ignore it. I wouldn’t let Maybelle die. Not when I could save her.”

She takes another breath and I hear how she’s gritting her teeth now, her voice seething with anger. “I had no idea I could use my power to heal people, but I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Fuck your rules. Fuck the consequences.”

I hover at the edge of the bed, blood slowly trickling down my stomach, preparing to fight for my sister if I need to—despite her wishes.

I quickly assess the location of my tools. The Vandawolf is holding my medallions in the makeshift pouch at his waist and my hammer is within the toolbox in my closet. I tell myself I’ll be fast enough to get to them in time, even though I know he could break Tamra’s neck before I’ve even taken a step.

He stares down at her, the hair falling across his human side for once, only his wolf’s features visible and oh-so-completely savage.

He raises his voice, his focus shifting to the door behind Tamra. “Rachel?”

Her voice sounds from the other side of the door. “We’re here, lord.”

“Bring Kedric in,” he says.

Tamra takes a step back, swinging to the door and then back to the Vandawolf, her eyes wide. “No, he isn’t responsible—”

The door opens and Rachel steps in from the shadowy corridor with Kedric close behind her.
